Mindfulness is the practice or skill of becoming aware of the present moment with intention. Focusing in on what is going on inside of us and around us, in the present, without opinion or judgment. It is one of the core skills I use regularly as a DBT Therapist and as a person practicing mental wellness.
What does it mean to be Mindful versus Mindless?
Noticing our thoughts when they pop into our heads vs. not noticing our thoughts.
Recognizing we can make mindful decisions on how we act vs. acting on impulse.
Focusing on this moment (now) vs. disconnecting with this moment.
Paying attention vs. not paying attention.
How do we become more Mindful?
Pay attention to yourself and others in the moment.
Take note of how your body is feeling, and any sensations that come up.
Use all 5 of your senses. What do you see? What do you hear? Taste? Touch? Smell?
Practice mindfulness daily, including mindful breathing exercises.
How does it help during times of stress?
It helps us to gather our concentration in the moment and focus on one thing at a time.
To raise awareness of what is going on inside and in our environment.
To check in with ourselves to identify if something feels off or out of balance.
It can help us to determine what to focus on and prioritize.
It helps us to live in the present moment and redirect our minds from the past or the future (preventing us from getting overwhelmed).
It helps us slow our minds down and reset.
Breathing deeply in and out, focusing on your breath in the moment, helps us to relax.
