Holiday stress can affect everyone, even children. There are many potential stressors during the holidays. Some potential stressors are gift giving pressure, family get togethers, money worries, lack of time, travel and taking time off work. Stress can lead to emotional problems.

What are some of the negative impacts of holiday stress-

  • Withdraw from social life

  • Feelings of sadness

  • Loss of emotional control

  • Sleep disturbance

  • Frustration

What to do to manage holiday stress-

  • Use of healthy boundaries with family, friends, coworkers, etc

  • Problem Solving

  • Acknowledge your feelings

  • Reach out to your emotional support system

  • Mindfulness- bringing attention to present moment and identifying what really counts

  • Self care

Understanding and managing stress can help in reducing stress not only during the holiday season, but it can also help you manage stress throughout the year. Please consider talking to a therapist or your healthcare provider about the pressures of the season. Seek help right away if you’re having suicidal thoughts.
